Hello Early Language Educators, 

Now that September, Back to School, and the craziness of the beginning of the school year is over, we should all take a deep breath and praise ourselves for our BIG and small wins. 

 

I just came back from the FLAVA Fall Conference where, in addition to learning, sharing and connecting with old and new World Languages collegues, I was happily surprised to reconnect with GWATFL colleagues. It was a great reminder of how important it is to have a Professional Learning Network where you find support, knowledge, and joy among many other things as Vicky Mason beautifully explains it in her latest blog post: The Importance of Professional Learning Communities. Thank you Vicky for this thoughtful and valuable blog post.

 

As the GWATFL MAP Early Language Leader, our goal is to facilitate those connections among other early language educators of the DMV. If you have any questions, suggestions, ideas and/or areas that you would like to received support, please contact me at glendadehoyos@gmail.com  

One way that GWATFL supports all of us is with the wonderful conferences that are organized during Fall and Spring. I can’t wait for the upcoming Fall 2022 Conference, “Inspiring Belonging: Building Community”, on November 5th at Capitol Hill Day School where I’ll be presenting the session: “Purposeful Play in the Early Language Class” (12:00 pm - 12:50 pm at Room C). This session's goal is to explore the importance of implementing PLAY with concrete ideas and specific examples that will promote language production in the classroom the very next day. I hope that all early language attendees come so we can all learn, share and grow together reflecting about PLAY. 

Another opportunity that we will have to connect is the Convening on Belonging - GWATFL Early Language (PK-2nd grade) at 11:00 am at Room C. The purpose of this meeting is to connect and listen to the ideas, questions, and suggestions to better serve and support the early language teachers of all languages in this age group.

GWATFL MAP Outreach, Liaison, and Advocacy (OLA) for DCPS Initiative would like to bring together language educators from DCPS and beyond to share, co-create, and brainstorm ideas, initiatives, and opportunities for GWATFL to address the specific needs of DCPS language teachers. 

In the Collaborative, we will meet, exchange perspectives and ideas on various topics, from proficiency to authentic resources, from racialized curriculum to equitable and just classrooms, from teacher burnout to self-care practices.

This session will focus on Beginning the School Year with Gusto: how to effectively use the energy and excitement of students to begin the school year with enthusiasm and gusto.

        Our first GWATFL DCPS Collaborative event on May 19 was a success. There were some genuine sharing among teachers about different topics and everyone brought their experience to the table.  

    As educators, we do not really have space to share what's going on for us, and to offer such space I feel is a gift to all the teachers. I am planning on hosting more GWATFL DCPS Collaborative events in the 2022-2023 school year, so stay tuned! Looking forward to virtually seeing you all!

    I am also sharing an article “The Desk Is a Barrier”  from Inspiring Teaching in the blog Hooray for Monday. Enjoy!

Early Language Leader

Thank you to all Early Language teachers that came to the GWATFL Spring Conference on April 30, 2022. It was an excellent event that we all enjoyed. If you participated in the conference, remember to complete the feedback for all the sessions that you participated in and for the overall conference. Remember that you can also get access to the handouts and other resources at the SCHED website.

As the school year comes to an end, our minds and schedules are busy, so one thing that I keep reminding myself is to pause, breathe and enjoy the moment in the best way I can. 

Here are 3 tools and or ideas that are helping me stay grounded and focus on the present with JOY:

1.Insight Timer App -This is an app with many free meditations.

1. Morning - I love this 5 - Minute Morning Intention Setting by Liza Colpa
2. Night - I also try to clear my mind before going to bed with meditations that help me finish my day with gratitude. This is one of many gratitude meditations available in the app: Sleep Gratitude by Hilary Lafone

2.Podcast - Listening to Inspiring and motivating episodes is a great way to stay focused and find joy in this busy season. 

1. I really enjoyed this World Language Classroom with Joshua Cabral episode about Strategies to Engage Early Language Learners with Carolina Goméz - Fun for Spanish Teachers.
2. I also loved this Language Lounge Podcast with Michelle Olah in conversation with Claudia Elliot, Connection, Communication and Comprehensibility.

3.Respect sleep & rest - I started understanding the importance of sleep after reading the book Sleep Revolution by Arianna Huffington. It hasn’t been easy for me, but little by little, I’ve been making changes to respect my sleep time and also prioritize rest. This TED TALK is a summary of her wonderful book and the essence of it in 3 minutes: How to succeed? Get more sleep. Enjoy it and don’t forget to sleep!

Free Online Workshop offered by CAL & AELRC

Dear colleagues,

The Assessment and Evaluation Language Resource Center (AELRC) and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) will offer a free three-hour online workshop on language program evaluation on Friday, May 20th from 2:00-5:00 pm EDT. This synchronous, interactive workshop hosted on Zoom is designed for K-12 world language educators (educators working with languages other than English) and will be delivered by AELRC and CAL staff members.

 

Please complete this application as soon as possible if you’re interested in participating in the workshop.

Please note that completing the survey does not guarantee participation in the workshop. The first 20 eligible applicants will be invited to participate in the workshop, and there will be a waitlist for all other applicants. We will notify you of the status of your application by end of day Wednesday, May 11th.

Workshop on Program Evaluation

Date and time: Friday, May 20th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM EDT.

• What is the language of instruction? English
• Who can enroll? K-12 world language educators. This may include language instructors, teacher trainers, and administrators who would like to learn more about language program evaluation to support the use of this type of evaluation in their own programs.
• What will I do in the workshop? You will learn about the fundamentals of program evaluation: the purposes and uses of program evaluation, frequently used methodologies and resources for collecting and organizing data, and steps for implementing a program evaluation process in different contexts.
• Who will be delivering the workshop? This workshop will be delivered by AELRC and CAL staff members.
• How much does it cost to enroll in the workshop? This workshop is free!

In March, DCPS teachers met virtually for their Spring Professional Development, focused on Teaching with Authentic Resources. It was a fun session, marked by the exchange of creative ideas on using authentic resources in ways that foster community in our classrooms, and that promote equity, differentiation and critical thinking! During the session, we were able to gauge interest from DCPS teachers to become members of GWATFL, attend the conference in person and support the Collaborative space for WL teachers of DCPS. The DCPS World Language Office is supporting teachers in attending the GWATFL Spring Conference by providing financial assistance. Thank you, DCPS!!!

I look forward to finally seeing teachers in person at the GWATFL conference, collaborating and having some fun together. My session “The Fun of Teaching! And Learning!” will surely bring smiles, laughter and most of all the joy of being together. We will connect through games and reflections (which you will be able to use with your students!), aimed at replenishing our energy and at releasing some of our need for perfectionism and control, inside and outside the classroom.

The first GWATFL In-Person Early Language Convening on March 5, 2022 helped us ata GWATFL with useful information to plan and coordinate events that will help all Early Language teachers with our needs, challenges, and growth as world language educators. We are looking forward to keeping collaborating to support each in this adventure that is teaching. I want to help, share, and facilitate more PD opportunities, resources, ideas for Early Language educators.

I'm happy to announce that I am presenting in the NNELL @EarlyLang Webinar Series on April 28, 2022.  I am presenting “'Mirrors & Windows in the #EarlyLang Class." It is my hope that as I shared my path to making intentional changes in my classes to act as mirrors & windows, we can all reflect, learn & grow. Hope to see you there! Click here to register.
